CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Jack finally wore himself out and they decided to go home. He still had to have a bath and get ready for school the next day. Holding her hand, he talked his head off until they arrived home.
From inside his pocket he pulled out two, plastic green army men and turned on the radio to listen to a popular kid’s cowboy program that aired on Sunday nights.
Yesterday she’d picked up several apples from the yard that had fallen from Mr. Clevenger’s tree. Taking a few others from the branches that leaned over her fence, she started peeling.
Watching Jack, she decided to surprise him with a pie since they’d be having sandwiches for dinner. With the pastry in the oven and his show nearly over, Cora washed dishes and listened as the small town settled down. Crickets chirped and a dog barked in the distance. Inside her home, contentment seemed to pour from the walls, encircling her and Jack in a blanket of security.
Times like this, Cora tried to push all her problems away. To not think about payday, or finding another job, or Maggie learning the truth. Not even the sharp blue eyes of Sherriff Carter.
Just before bedtime, she and Jack paid their neighbor a visit. She knocked while Jack, grinning, held the warm pie.
Mr. Clevenger opened the door with a sour look on his face. “What do you want?”
Jack held out the pie and she smiled down at him. “This is my nephew, Jack. Jack, this Mr. Clevenger.”
“Pleased to meet ya.”
The neighbor managed a grumble.
“Several of the apples from your tree out back fell into my yard. I also took a few from the branches that extended over the fence.”
“Stealing my apples, are you?”
“I baked you a pie with them.”
Jack held it out. “We’re sharing.”
“Humph.” He looked closer. “You bake that, missy?”
“Yes sir, I did.”
“Uh huh, well you any good at baking?”
“I think so.”
“My wife Wanda was the best cook in the county.”
“I’m sure she was.”
The rich aroma filled the tiny porch. “You put cinnamon in there?”
“I did, with sugar and butter.”
“Humph.” He sniffed.
Jack had the pie high over his head. “You want it, Mr. Clevenger? Cause if you don’t, I’ll eat it.”
“Now, don’t go getting greedy, young fella.”
The elderly man took the pie. “I’ll try it. Don’t expect much though.”
Cora stifled the grin that threatened. She didn’t want to anger the man. “I hope you enjoy it.”
“Don’t count your chickens.”
Cora and Jack smiled victoriously as they turned to go. She knew Mr. Clevenger wouldn’t be easy, but there was just something about the old man she adored.
“And dab nabbit don’t go stealing any apples from my side of the fence.”
“We won’t,” they said in unison.
With Jack tucked into bed, Cora warmed up a cup of coffee, donned her sweater and moved out to sit on the front porch. She had to fix those steps before someone broke their neck.
She dreaded the work week ahead. Bart grew bolder and more aggressive each day. No one had said anyway, but Cora felt she’d be the first one in Bart’s office come Friday.
